Angelo Marona's Fantastic Tale

One of the biggest hits of the Directors Fortnight section at the last Cannes Festival. The protagonist of Quentin Dupieux's black comedy is... a deerskin jacket. The jacket becomes Georges’s obsession - and George is a loser who dreams of becoming a famous filmmaker after buying an expensive velvety article of clothing. After spending the last of his money on the jacket, Georges wanders the French countryside getting closer and closer to the edge of insanity. He accosts people, talks with tassels, grabs his camera, and wanders in the hills. In the net of his fantasies, fantasies and lies he ensnares a local bartendress with a penchant for reediting old films at night. And it became Deerskin, which to me is a film about gentle madness and mostly about freedom: what do we do with our freedom, admits the director. Mixing comedy with horror and drama, Deerskin does not lose touch with reality for a moment - strangeness and absurdity are like amazing growths on its raw matter. It is also an acting tour de force by Jean Dujardin. The actor known for the Oscar-winning Artist completely transforms to become jacket-talking Georges and mocks his own star status.
