The House by the Sea

Robert Guédiguian
La villa

The Green Fog The Image Book

A deep breath taken on the terrace of a villa located on a hill in the idyllic Méjean Bay near Marseille will not save Maurice from a stroke. However, it will help resuscitate a family that has been holding its breath for years. The main character's children-Angela the actress, Joseph the writer and Armand the restaurateur-come to the rescue. They once spent holidays and fishing trips together; now they enjoy their prosperity and business failures are their only source of stress. The passage of time has frozen their relationship to such an extent that they feel uncomfortable in each other's company. Guédiguian anchored his film in this French bay in order to take on the subject of death once again. He also traps in his net the same actors who have been working with him for years: Ariane Ascaride (his wife), Jean-Pierre Darroussin and Gerard Meylan (who appeared in Ki lo sa? some 30 years earlier). Just as Federico Fellini made his hometown of Rimini into something of a memorial, Guédiguian has done the same with the area near Marseille, making The House by the Sea.
