Awarded at the Berlinale, the found-footage Grandmamauntsistercat feels like a live report from an unusual lesson in "raising a family." Zuza Banasińska overpowers a strict teacher, steals teaching aids (in this case, communist-era didactic films made at the Educational Film Studio), and repurposes them, replacing the misogynistic undertones of the originals with a celebration of matriarchy. The result is an authentic thought revolution, all the more effective because it is carried out with a playful smile.
Zuza Banasińska is a director and artist originally from Warsaw, now living in Amsterdam. Her works have been shown at venues such as the CCA U-Jazdowski Castle, the Brno House of Arts, and the Het Nieuwe Instituut. Banasińska's work is currently distributed by Video Power and EYE Filmmuseum. Her latest film premiered at this year's Rotterdam IFF and Berlinale, where it received the Teddy Award for Best Short Film.
