Daaaaaalí

Quentin Dupieux
France 2023 / 79’
Cuckoo Kneecap

Daaaaaalí! That's exactly how he pronounces his own name—loudly, drawn out, with theatrical emphasis. Salvador Dalí is the quintessential megalomaniac and eccentric. An inexperienced journalist discovers this firsthand when she attempts to interview him. The first time, Dalí strides through a hotel corridor, monologuing all the way, only to leave abruptly upon learning that the interview won't be recorded on camera. In subsequent meetings, he maintains his role as a trickster. Portrayed by various actors, he injects chaos into every situation, including the very film that bears his name. As if influenced by his capricious personality, the on-screen story refuses to adhere to narrative conventions, constantly meandering, looping, and tangling itself. Daaaaaalí! is a tribute to the most famous surrealist of all time, crafted by one of contemporary surrealism's most talented disciples, Quentin Dupieux. The director weaves a humorous fantasy that aims to be true not to the facts, but to the spirit of the self-proclaimed genius with the iconic mustache.
