The Art of Time

Fergus Daly, Katherine Waugh
Irland 2009 / 96’
Polish Animation & Avantgarde: Night

We no longer have time for time, says one of the protagonists in Fergus Daly and Katherine Waugh's film essay. The makers of this documentary decided to follow in the footsteps of artists from various fields who have ennobled time. They examine its boundaries, ask how perception and memory have changed in the Information Age, and seek out means of expression that allow them to reveal time's uncertain nature. Among those interviewed in the film are avant-garde theater guru Robert Wilson and the founder of Berlin's Holocaust Memorial, Peter Eisenman. A number of filmmakers who are no strangers to New Horizons audiences also share their views. Chantal Akerman, a Belgian neomodernist, talks about the importance of long shots, while Aleksander Sokurov discusses the influence of Einstein's theories on Russian Ark and the pitfalls of editing, which time tries to subjugate. The Art of Time can be seen as an erudite textbook on slow cinema, explaining the trend in artistic cinema in recent decades.
