With ten Oscar nominations, including for Alfonso Cuarón for Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Foreign Language Film, and the Golden Lion of the Venice Film Festival, Roma is definitely the most famous film of last year and the most personal of all the films by the author of Gravity and And Your Mother Too. It tells the story of a young maid working in the middle-class dominated Roma district of the Mexican capital. With this film, Cuarón writes a letter full of artistry and love for the women who brought him up and paints a vivid and moving picture of domestic tensions and changes in social hierarchy against the background of the political chaos of the 1970s. This is poetic and subtle cinema, made with attention to every detail in black and white.
