The House That Jack Built

Lars von Trier
Denmark, France, Germany, Sweden 2018 / 155’
subtitles: Polish (English dialogs)
The Guilty The Wild Pear Tree

For some, a masterpiece of contemporary cinema; for others, one of the most terrifying films of recent years. Laced with black humor, this is the long-awaited new film from Lars von Trier, the maker of NymphomaniacAntichrist and Melancholia. Von Trier has made a lot of films about good women; this time, he decided to make one about a bad man. The eponymous Jack is a new addition to the pantheon of serial killers, alongside the Joker, Jack the Ripper, Jean-Baptiste Grenouille from Perfume and Hannibal Lecter. Starring Matt Dillion, Bruno Ganz and Uma Thurman, this is a provocative and bold film, full of visual ideas that seeks answers to questions about the nature of good and evil. Von Trier shows more than a decade in the life of a serial killer who, with every crime, perfects his bloody modus operandi. Jack is a thinker, someone who looks for solutions, a passionate engineer and architect, but when we watch him stage a crime scene and prepare the corpse to be photographed, there is no doubt that he has something of an artist in him. It's even somewhat like the work of the director on a film set. In portraying the cruel but devilishly brilliant Jack, Von Trier draws on themes from Goethe, the paintings of Francis Bacon and Eugène Delacroix, the poetry of William Blake, the music of the outstanding pianist Glenn Gould and even his own works. He invites the viewer to take part in the performance, which requires not only strong nerves but also an open mind. However, this approach is paid back with interest.
