The Gold-Laden Sheep & the Sacred Mountain The Man Who Surprised Everyone

The makers of Goodnight Mommy once again deal with family life, focusing on the dark and unspeakable. This top-notch horror (made in collaboration with Britain’s legendary Hammer studio) takes us to a lodge in the wilderness, where two children, their father and his new girlfriend are to spend their first holiday together. Siblings Aidan and Mia don’t conceal their anger about their father’s wedding plans. They blame Grace for their mother’s tragic fate, and they don’t even feign affection toward the delicate, shy girl. When Grace ends up alone with the kids, Aidan and Mia don’t just do everything they can to make her life miserable, but they also start digging around in her past. Then things start getting weird: the power goes out, items disappear. Transgenerational wounds break through the door, religious madness penetrates the walls, anger creeps around in the basement, and the icy lake becomes a mirror for frozen but rapidly melting emotions. From the opening scenes, the tension keeps us in its iron grip. The Lodge is not just a masterpiece of the genre—horror was a fantastic pretext for the filmmakers to tell a story about childhood demons and the wounds inflicted early in life that the bandage of time will never heal.
