Pain and Glory Portrait of a Lady on Fire

A Palme d’Or winner in Cannes and the highest-rated movie by Screen critics, Bong Joon-ho’s film won the hearts of festival audiences. Combining a crime story with drama and a thriller with a dark comedy, the director of Snowpiercer and Okja connects two families, two worlds and two social classes that have less and less chance of encountering each other in real life. They are separated by a growing economic gap that pushes the indebted majority lower and lower while the rich minority keeps rising. The metaphor becomes literal when unemployed parents with two children are forced to camp down low in the gutter of the slums while one has to climb stairs to reach the entrance to Mr. Park’s exclusive estate. This is no obstacle for a boy from a poor family. Although he failed his college entrance exams, he has ambition and enough cunning to climb the economic ladder. When the opportunity arises to take on a job as a tutor in Mr. Park’s home, he plays the role of an educated, modest and trustworthy teacher flawlessly—exactly the kind rich snobs fantasize about. The conspiracy slowly enmeshes more members of the family, eliminating the Parks’ old servants along the way. As a result of a series of shocking, tragicomic events, both the rich and poor confront their lifestyles, which leads to a finale that will have you glued to your seat.

Bong Joon-ho

Born in 1969, Bong Joon-ho is a director and screenwriter and the first Korean to win the Palme d’Or (2019, for Parasite). His films include the hits The Host and Snowpiercer. His first films were presented at the San Sebastián Festival, and his subsequent films were shown in Cannes. He made his debut in the festival’s main competition in 2017 with Okja. He is one of a small number of artists capable of combing—with sophistication—genre and arthouse films. In humorous tales that border on sci-fi, horror, crime and thrillers, the Korean director diagnoses the problems of the era of late capitalism.
