Casanova’s final days. In the French provinces, the famous philanderer is devoting himself to small pleasures. He is less interested in the art of love than he is in eating; in the art of speaking, he is second to none, eloquently denouncing the Church, revealing women’s secrets, predicting the timing of beheadings. The weary libertine abandons his château, however, in order to travel through the idyllic landscape of the Carpathian Mountains to meet with Count Dracula. Like a sleepy 18th-century courtier, the dreamlike Story of My Death is the complete opposite of the classical biography or Fellini’s rococo fantasy Casanova. Albert Serra avoided a traditional narrative to show the decadent mood of the era with the help of contrasting visual details: refinement in a rude joke, powdered filth and rural innocence, vitality and a slaughtered animal. He portrays the meeting of two legendary sinners, connected only by the compulsion of desire, which is a symbol for self-serving intellect clashing with a brutal, dark force.
