Demonlover

Olivier Assayas
France 2002 / 129’
subtitles: Polish and English
Sentimental Destinies Clean

Together with Irma Vep and Boarding Gate, Demonlover forms a trilogy about digital culture, late-stage capitalism and globalization. The story of a powerful supranational corporation that produces and distributes Japanese pornographic manga constantly zigzags, as it loses the scent and blurs the boundaries between reality and fantasy. The engrossing intrigue becomes more and more entangled; the mischievous game that the director plays with the audience consists in constantly undermining our trust in what we are seeing. Assayas constructs his film on the opposition of the seen and the unseen—he is interested in the economy of the image and its market value. Thus, Demonlover is also a critical examination of the mechanisms governing the world of cinema. Fragmentary, deceptive and at the same time visually intense, the film makes us aware of the fact that we have no power over images. The only one to have such power is above us, directing our gaze. The tentacles of the corporation extend from Paris, through Tokyo, to Texas. Assayas is interested in the process in which the absence of geographic, financial and cultural—not to mention moral—boundaries ensures that even the most seasoned player will unexpectedly become nothing more than a pawn. Demonlover's uneasy atmosphere is the work of Sonic Youth—the soundtrack was created in parallel with the film.

Olivier Assayas

Born in Paris in 1955, Olivier Assayas is the son of screenwriter Jacques Rémy (whose real name was Raymond Assayas). It was at his father’s side that Olivier took his first steps in the industry while still a teenager. He began making his first short amateur films a little while later. At the same time, he launched his career as a film critic, writing for the famous Cahiers du cinéma. He made his full-length debut with Disorder in 1986. Since then, he has made a number of films that have ensured him a position as one of the most important directors in European cinema. His most acclaimed works include Irma Vep, Something in the Air (an award winner for best screenplay at the Venice Festival) and Clouds of Sils Maria.
