The Daughters of Fire

Albertina Carri
Las hijas del fuego
Argentina 2018 / 115’
So Pretty White Noise

If Thelma and Louise were to take a trip through Patagonia, picking up a series hitchhikers and engaging in group lesbian sex while creating a new society, this would be their story. With a fully self-aware narrative, the film uses porn as a political act. Seeing that the body is a battlefield, let’s try to beat it. Presented in the San Sebastián competition and an award winner at the LesGaiCineMad LGBT Festival in Madrid, The Daughters of Fire evokes plenty of emotions. This is an ode to their love of their own body. Skinny, fat—all women find each other mutually attractive. Polyamory is enriched with fetishism, bondage, S&M and sacrilege. Whenever men appear on-screen for a moment, it is, for the female protagonists, like being driven out of paradise. The Argentinian wilderness becomes the stage for a struggle for femininity appropriated by a macho culture, the place where the history of Tierra del Fuego is rewritten by its daughters.
