The Devil

Andrzej Żuławski
Poland 1972 / 119’
That Most Important Thing: Love

Jakub, like Kordian, tried to kill the king, but he fainted at the bedroom’s threshold and ended up in prison. During the second partition of Poland, he is freedby a mysterious man in black who orders him to return to his homeland, where a series of shocking discoveries await; Jakub experiences only depravity and treason. Crazed with despair and rage, he begins a bloody crusade. But is he a noble avenger or a pathetic puppet in the hands of the man in black? Andrzej Żuławski's costume horror refers to both the romantic tradition and the events of March 1968. It was because of its political undertones that the film was banned and the director had to leave the country. However, even on a literal level, The Devil is an extremely provocative work, a delirious Grand Guignol in which Żuławski takes his blunt and over-expressive style to the absolute extreme.
