This is not a mistake: one of the biggest events of this year’s New Horizons will be the directorial debut of Jonah Hill. In Mid90s, which was well received at the Berlin Festival, the American comedian takes a surprisingly subtle look at the dilemmas of adolescence. For the main character, 13-year-old Stevie (Sunny Suljic), the period of entering adulthood is associated with a series of disappointments and humiliations. Brought up by a single mother, he doesn’t get along well with his peers, and at home he is the victim of his aggressive older brother (Lucas Hedges). Stevie’s new passion, skateboarding, offers him an escape from his problems. Having been compared to Boyhood and Minding the Gap, Hill’s film captures audiences by providing them with a nostalgic journey back to the nineties. Hill is able to resurrect the unique atmosphere of the era mainly thanks to the fantastic soundtrack, which features hip-hop hits from the period alongside songs by Morrissey and Nirvana.
Born in 1983, Jonah Hill is an actor, producer, screenwriter and also one of the most famous American comedians of our era. He achieved his first successes in comedies associated with Judd Apatow. He has twice been nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor (for Moneyball and Wolf of Wall Street). Well received at festivals in Toronto and Berlin, Mid90s is his full-length directorial debut.
