Denis Côté (Bestiarium, Vic + Flo Saw a Bear, A Skin So Soft), a favorite of New Horizons audiences, once again takes viewers on a trip to small-town Canada. The action in Ghost Town Anthology, which premiered at this year’s Berlinale, takes place in the middle of a cold winter in the little town of Sainte-Irénée-les-Neiges in Quebec. The town’s sleepy atmosphere is disturbed by a car accident that claims the life of a teenage boy. It soon turns out that this is just the beginning of a series of strange events that take place on the border between the world of the living and the dead. Ghost Town Anthology is a genre hybrid typical of Côté, in which an intimate drama combines seamlessly with horror. However, the Canadian director’s film is more than just a brilliant game that plays on what the audience is used to seeing. In using the film’s atypical form to capture the audience’s attention, Côté induces us to reflect on the place of death in contemporary culture and various ways of dealing with someone’s passing.
