The Wife

Björn Runge
Sweden, USA, UK 2017 / 100’
The Rider

The Wife turned out to be prophetic. The picture premiered on the eve of the literary Noble Prize controversy. Even though it does not address the issues of sexual assault directly, it does ask questions raised recently in relation to the most important literary award: who deserves it? The movie - directed by Björn Runge - can be perceived as a statement in a larger discussion about male dominance in arts. The Wife pays a tribute and homage to all women in the background, supporting their husbands and partners in their narcissistic career paths. Glenn Close was superbly cast here as a title faithful wife of an American novelist Joe Castelman (Jonathan Pryce) who was just announced as the Nobel Prize winner. Christian Slater returns to the screen as a sleazy biographer and would-be writer, who follows the Castlemans to Sweden to the ceremony in an effort to discredit the prize winner.
