The Insult

Modern-day Beirut. An argument between neighbors-Tonim, a Lebanese Christian, and Yasser, a Palestinian refugee-gets out of control. The trivial dispute ends up before the courts, where it attracts the attention of journalists and is turned into a historical and political conflict. With every utterance, the atmosphere grows darker and the result of the confrontation more uncertain. Director Ziad Doueiri explains the paradoxes of the Middle East in an accessible manner. In doing so, he also touches on a universal mechanism whereby an inconspicuous impulse is sometimes enough to revive frustrations and resentments that have long lain dormant. As a result of the angry energy emanating from The Insult, critics have compared the Lebanese film to the early work of Spike Lee, led by his famous Do the Right Thing. Not surprisingly, Doueiri's work was considered one of the biggest discoveries at last year's Venice festival, and Kamel El Basha, who played Yasser, received the Volpi Cup for best actor.
