Sorry Angel

Christophe Honoré
Plaire, aimer et courir vite
France 2018 / 132’
Season of the Devil The Green Fog

Christophe Honoré returns to the subject of HIV, which he tackled earlier in his novel for young adults Tout contre Léo and in a made-for-television movie based on the book (2002). In Sorry Angel, he tells the story of a hidden romance between a writer approaching 40 (Pierre Deladonchamps, the star of Stranger by the Lake) and a passionate literature student named Arthur (Vincent Lacoste). Their relationship, which is based on the difference in their age and experience, is complicated by Jacques' illness, as his body stops obeying his wishes. Honoré combines refined aesthetics with sensuality, a sense of humor, youthful energy and a bitter view of unfulfilled love. The film's color palette relies on various shades of blue, which, in a subtle nostalgic touch (the action takes place in 1993), shows the exhilarating flirtation between two men whose road to passion leads through brilliant discussions about the books they've read. An inspirational film in which erotica is inseparably entwined in the grip of death.

Christophe Honoré

Born in Carhaix, France, in 1970, Christophe Honoré is a film director, screenwriter, critic, writer and playwright. In 1995, he moved to Paris, where he began working for Cahiers du Cinéma. He published his first novels and plays soon thereafter. He is considered a successor to the New Wave.
