The Workshop

The Workshop by Laurent Cantet, winner of the Palme d'Or for The Class, is a thrilling love story with a strong focus on social issues that is played out between a well-known writer (Marina Foïs, nominated for a César Award for her performance) and an attractive teenager (Matthieu Lucci). It is also an allegorical story about the end of Europe as we know it. The writer and the teenager get to know one another during her writing workshops. The boy's fascination with the ideology of the far right unsettles her, while at the same time inflaming her imagination. In the picturesque scenery of the port city of La Ciotat, they play a dangerous game with surprising twists and turns. The erotic tension in their relationship turns out to be closer to violence. The film is a love letter in which words of desire are written alongside threats. The screenplay was written in collaboration with Robin Campillo, the director of BPM (Beats Per Minute),an award winner at Cannes.
