Dovlatov Mektoub. My Love: Canto uno

The latest film by Hong Sang-soo, the maker of, as Pedro Costa says, little comedies about the sorts of things that typically go on between people. A day in the life of several actors and screenwriters spent listening to the music of Schubert, Wagner and Offenbach at a small café on a side street. This time, we see Kim Min-hee in the role of Areum, as if taken she were plucked from Hong's previous films-Claire's CameraThe Day AfterOn the Beach at Night Alone-a disconnected and in essence rebellious girl who is writing conversations overheard among patrons. Oddly enough, they all involve suicide. But is Areum actually eavesdropping or is she rather the author of the conversations, a writer looking for inspiration, with the individual scenes visualizations of her thoughts? Although she tries to remain neutral, she is repeatedly drawn by the protagonists into their conversations until she finally drinks soju with them. Hong doesn't leave his-as it would appear--lightly sketched universe, arguing that truly philosophical questions always arise in conversation with the Another, not in solitude.

Hong Sang-soo

Hong Sang-soo was born in 1961. After completing his studies in South Korea, he continued at universities in California and Chicago. He made his first feature film in 1996, The Day a Pig Fell Into the Well. Although often compared to the masters of French cinema, he is constantly developing his own style. The most important features of his work include an interest in moral dilemmas facing his characters, mise en abyme, and a subtle sense of humor. He is a favorite at international festivals. He has won numerous awards, including at Cannes, Rotterdam, and Locarno.
