A Cat with a Dog

Janusz Kondratiuk
Jak pies z kotem
Poland 2018 / 102’
Autsajder

The great return of Janusz Kondratiuk. The maker ofthe famous Dziewczyny do wzięcia (Available Girls) once again combines elements of fiction and documentary to present a grotesque vision of reality. He also lends the film a deeply personal tone. A Cat With a Dog is the story of the complicated relationship between a director (Robert Więckiewicz) and his brother, Andrzej (Olgierd Łukaszewicz), the maker of the cult Hydrozagadka. The far from ideal brotherly bond becomes tighter when Andrzej is stricken with a serious illness. The brothers alternate between showing each other tenderness and wallowing in their grudges. Their partners play an important role in their lives: Janusz's wife, Beata (Bożena Stachura), who is increasingly troubled by the entire situation, and Andrzej's muse, Iga (Aleksandra Konieczna), who is lost in despair. Misunderstandings between the four are a source of tension, as well as first-rate humor. The result is perhaps the most honest Polish film about dying since Małgorzata Szumowska's memorable 33 Scenes from Life.
