One Day

Zsófia Szilágyi
Egy nap
Hungary 2018 / 99’
Noiseless, Desert Extras Petra

We watch Anna (Zsofia Szamosi) for barely one day. The camera follows her when she is preparing meals for her three children, when she takes them to school, preschool and classes. It's with her when she is rushing to work at a language school where she teaches Italian, and when she's worried about money or her marriage-she's just learned from an old friend that she and Anna's husband had something of an affair. This information only reinforces her feeling of underappreciation and of being invisible. Debut director Zsófia Szilágyi, who previously worked as an assistant to Ildikó Enyedi on the Golden Bear-winning On Body and Soul in Berlin, makes sure we painfully experience every twitch of overworked Anna's strained nerves and her reaction to every irritating sound. As if we were inside the head of a woman whose life-which has become a perpetual race-has lost its flavor and charm. Will she manage to find these things again? Having been compared with Chantal Akerman'sJeanne Dielman, 23 Commerce Quay, 1080 BrusselsOne Day deals with the exhaustion that comes from domestic duties and the relentless routine of motherhood. The film premiered during Critics' Week at Cannes, where it won the main prize.
