The Heart The Seen and Unseen

Years spent partying in Spain have left a mark on Nojet's (the wonderful Léonore Ekstrand) face. Now nearing 70, she returns to Sweden for the funeral of her wealthy father. She inherits from him the title property in the center of Stockholm, whose best years are long a thing of the past. She wants to sell it as quickly as possible in order to get back to her carefree life, but she ends up in a dispute with her family and with the tenants. In defending her interests, she turns from a sybarite into something of a warrior. The Real Estate was named the ugliest film at this year's Berlinale: cinematographer Måns Månsson did everything he could to show the protagonists in the least flattering light and framing. The point of this unsightliness wasn't to mock the characters, however, but rather to show the shameful problems that are tearing apart Sweden's seemingly happy, cultured and well-organized society. This bizarre film boldly takes on the taboo of old age and exposes the problems of real estate speculation and abuse by the privileged class, while being as disturbing as its comical.
