Out 1, Part 4

Jacques Rivette
Out 1: Noli me tangere, partie 4
France 1971 / 171’
Out 1, Part 3 Celine and Julie Go Boating

This monumental, eight-part work is a loose adaptation of Balzac's novel The Thirteen. A chronicle of rehearsals conducted by two theater troupes preparing for a performance of Greek tragedies, whose characters, like the everyday life of the actors, are a reflection of the enigmatic history of a secret fraternity in a mysterious Paris resembling Pandora's box. A masterpiece of the French avant-garde with wonderful performances by the greatest actors of the time. (Ariel Schweitzer)

part 4.

The finale of Jacques Rivette's Out 1 is not so much a culmination as it is the entangling of various threads into a Gordian knot that can only be unraveled through the arbitrary editing of the film. Contrary to what Hollywood screenwriters might say, life cannot be reduced to the framework of a simple story. Life is a conspiracy—impenetrable, but also exciting. (Piotr Mirski)
