The Day After

The relationship between Minjung and painter Young-soo is on the rocks because gossip about her spending nights completely drunk with other men. Her emotional and romantic boyfriend thinks he knows his girl, does not want to believe the chatter, but breaks down after an argument and leaves. Lovesick, he then tries to seek her out all over the city to amend his mistake (the city in Hong’s film is actually only a few blocks). Meanwhile, she – but is it really her? – meets other men, who claim to know her really well, though they may be mistaken. A doppelganger? Who is this girl? It is difficult to avoid falling into Hong’s grotesque trap. As usual, the director multiplies double identities, intensifying the emotional obsession and insecurity. His characters are unpredictable, not so much as a result of their psyche, but rather the intellectual game the director is playing with the audience. He successfully, paints a mosaic of human faults and the contradictory impulses driving us.

Hong Sang-soo

Hong Sang-soo was born in 1961. After completing his studies in South Korea, he continued at universities in California and Chicago. He made his first feature film in 1996, The Day a Pig Fell Into the Well. Although often compared to the masters of French cinema, he is constantly developing his own style.
