The Day After

Hong Sang-soo
South Korea  2017 / 92’
On the Beach at Night Alone Yourself and Yours

This film is a game of narrative charades in which one of Hong Sang-soo's favorite actors - Kwon Hae-Hyo - plays two different variations of a literary publisher and critic who is having trouble with marital fidelity. A new employee (Min-hee Kim) witnesses the man's emotional crisis. At the publishing house, she is hired to take over his lover's position, and is thus drawn into the swirl of misunderstandings, evasions and passions. The beginning writer's propensity for reflection and her intense, albeit short-lived presence, become a catalyst for events. Hong Sang-soo, using his characteristic "hidden geometry" of repetitions, misperceptions and unstable identities, returns to his favorite question: how much of life is the result of thoughtful steps, i.e. consciousness of where we are at, and to what extent is it coincidence that directs our destiny behind our back. He also exposes the main character's shaky masculinity, who oftentimes - after an evening spent drinking soju - returns home with shaky balance.

Hong Sang-soo

Hong Sang-soo was born in 1961. After completing his studies in South Korea, he continued at universities in California and Chicago. He made his first feature film in 1996, The Day a Pig Fell Into the Well. Although often compared to the masters of French cinema, he is constantly developing his own style. The most important features of his work include an interest in moral dilemmas facing his characters, mise en abyme, and a subtle sense of humor. He is a favorite at international festivals. He has won numerous awards, including at Cannes, Rotterdam, and Locarno.
