A Ghost Story

David Lowery
USA 2017 / 87’
A Fantastic Woman Double Lover

C (Casey Affleck) and M (Rooney Mara) are a young married couple at a crossroads: M dreams of change, of moving somewhere else, while C wants to stay in their little house. His wish is fulfilled, but in a slightly different way than he might have expected. A Ghost Story is, as the title suggests, a ghost story, and, just like the cat in Wisława Szymborska's poem, the couple wander the halls waiting for their loved ones. As if completely unaware of the fact that the world is moving forward, leaving them far behind. The American director-his long-term fascination with Terrence Malick is apparently not fading-is not afraid of being ridiculed: in addition to bing a painful reflection on death, his well-received Sundance film also offers the first logical explanation of why ghosts always appear wrapped in sheets. Time, David Lowery seems to be saying, does not always heal all wounds-especially when you have too much of it.
