Arábia By the Time It Gets Dark

Following a 10-year absence, Catherine (Lolita Chammah) returns to her native Luxembourg to rebuild a relationship with her nearly 11-year-old daughter Alba (Themis Pauwels). Alba barely can remember her mother-not to mention her struggles with addiction-as she was replaced long ago by her stern grandmother, Elisabeth (Isabelle Huppert), who does not believe in her daughter's sudden transformation. This time, Catherine has no intention of giving up. The similarities between the actresses in Laura Schroeder's film are no accident, as she cast a mother and daughter in the main roles. Isabelle Huppert and Lolita Chammah have been on film sets together before, having both appeared for the first time together in Claude Chabrol's Story of Women. Screened recently at the Berlin Film Festival, Barrage-in which reality mixes with fantasy and family ties constrain rather than bringing people closer-is a symbolic passing of the baton. Unlike her protagonist, who is sensitive to even the slightest mistakes, Huppert retreats into the background.
