The Party

Sally Potter
Great Britain 2017 / 71’
The Ornithologist The Woman Who Left

Janet has just been appointed to a high-ranking political post and organizes a party for her closest friends: elegant, well-educated, top-shelf people, including the no-nonsense and critical April, along with her German partner, an expert on Eastern philosophy; a lesbian couple-a professor named Martha and Jinny, who is infatuated with her; as well as an Irish businessman who is a cocaine addict and his wife, Marianne, who is late and keeps everyone waiting. At the center of all this is Bill, Janet's husband, a university professor. Bill has a secret, the revelation of which completely upsets the balance of power among the protagonists. In making this somewhat theatrical comedy, Sally Potter wanted her film to be treated as a political metaphor. Shot during the heated period of the Brexit referendum, The Party is a powerful and direct commentary on the situation in the Great Britain. The film's star-studded cast includes Kristin Scott Thomas, Timothy Spalla, Patricia Clarkson, Bruno Ganz, and Cillian Murphy.
