Loving Vincent

Dorota Kobiela, Hugh Welchman
Poland, Great Britain  2017 / 80’
Loveless Manifesto

Loving Vincent offers afresh take on the formula that proved successful for Citizen Kane many years ago. Just like Orson Welles' famous debut, Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman's film tells the story of the title character through the memories of those around him. The entirety consists of a fascinating portrait laced with all of the subject's contradictory emotions. As befits a story about an artist who was anything but traditional, the Polish-British co-production employs an impressively innovative form. Loving Vincent has been advertised as the first fully painted feature film. After the shooting with actors was completed, individual frames were projected onto canvas, which were then painted frame by frame to create film sequences. The purpose of this intricate production technique was to bring Van Gogh's images to life in the most convincing way possible on a movie screen. With the resulting effect, one can expect that Loving Vincent will turn out to be the same sort of festival hit that Shirley: Visions of Reality (13th New Horizons) was.
