Celine and Julie Go Boating

Jacques Rivette
Céline et Julie vont en bateau
France 1974 / 192’
Out 1, Part 4 The Bridge of the North

A librarian-cum-magician and a cabaret dancer are drawn into an investigation revolving around an odd house haunted by childhood memories. During intervals in this enigmatic drama, the two young women, who have formed a close friendship, enjoy spoiling the plans of the suspected impresario. This fun and playful film, containing references to A Midsummer Night's Dream and Alice in Wonderland, shows Paris in both a realistic and fantastic way, as a theater of urban peregrinations and conspiracies.
