The Woman Who Left

A film that presents the dramatic reality of immigrants and refugees waiting for asylum in Villa Quaglina di Asti. Following his mother's dying wish, and despite his illness, Pippo Delbono heads out in search of a God he believes does not exist. And so he begins to share his daily life with men whose war, hunger, or lack of prospects led to a desperate escape. They live suspended between painful memories and an uncertain future-and I'm one of them, declares the filmmaker. Known for his unusual juxtapositions of images and music, the director intersperses intimate details of the immigrants' lives (also captured through the flawed lens of a mobile phone) with fragments from his own stage performances. He becomes a confidant and, at the same time, calls on his theater workshops to urge the men to improvise. In the end, he decides to stage an evangelical scene performed by immigrants, involuntary heroes of the modern world.
