Astrid and Markus consider themselves liberal and open-minded. Though unmarried, they have been in a happy relationship and raising a daughter together for years. Astrid works as a stand-up comedian, while Markus produces her television appearances. They are not lacking when it comes to money or a sense of humor. They have no problem laughing at themselves, and they also know how to amuse others. A doctor's diagnosis disrupts their perfect life, however, when it turns out that the second child they are expecting is going to be born with Down syndrome and a heart defect. While the protagonists have empathy and the strength to come to terms with nature's decision, German medicine offers them another way out in the form of a late-term abortion. Anne Zohra Berrached holds nothing back in showing us how they are able to achieve a bitter balance. In the film, every argument can be used either in favor of seeing the pregnancy to term or of terminating it. And although Astrid gets good advice from her doctors, family, and friends, it soon becomes clear that she is the only one who can make the final decision.
