In his latest film, Thomas Vinterberg, nominated for an Oscar for The Hunt and one of the co-founders of the cult Dogme 95, recalls his childhood memories in a commune. He and co-writer Tobias Lindholm have created something more than a film that simply comes to terms with Vinterberg's upbringing. The 1970s, Erik and Anna have been married for a long time. He is an architect, while she hosts a television news program. When he inherits a large house, they decide to do something about their boredom in life and establish a commune along with a group of strangers. At the same time, Erik meets a student who is strikingly similar to his wife, albeit much younger. The tone of the film changes according to the rhythm of their everyday life: from fast, almost comedic sequences to a poignant study of a nervous breakdown. It is a vivisection of the myth of community. The idea of intimacy falls apart in the face of selfishness; egalitarian decision-making at the house turns into something of a tyranny of the majority. In The Commune, we see shallow human relationships, untold grievances and needs, loneliness, emotional shortcomings. Participants at the festival in Berlin also saw in the film an allegorical story about society and a metaphor for contemporary Europe. Regardless of whether it is about intimacy or politics, The Commune remains painfully relevant today.

Thomas Vinterberg is a Danish film director and screenwriter. He made his debut in 1996 with The Biggest Heroes. His Festen (Grand Prix at Cannes) was the first feature film made according to the rules that they formulated. In time, he left Dogme 95, as did the other members of the group.
