United States of Love

Tomasz Wasilewski
Zjednoczone Stany Miłości
Poland, Sweden 2016 / 104’

Tomasz Wasilewski's (Floating Skyscrapers, Audience Award winner at the 13th T-Mobile New Horizons International Film Festival) latest film is like Chekhov's saddest play and, at the same time, a refreshing postscript to cinema of moral anxiety. The Polish director takes us back to the early 1990s to tell the story of four women who are all close friends. Living in a small town, Agata, Renata, Iza, and Marzena are trying to find their place in a rapidly changing world. This is no easy task since, although wild capitalism rages all around them, people's mentality is still firmly rooted in an earlier era. Wasilewski's protagonists get constantly tossed back and forth between their fidelity to convention and a desire to live life on their own terms. What they desire more than anything, however, is love, which turns out to be alternately toxic and healing, plunging them into depression one moment and bringing them hope the next. Emanating from each scene is an emotional intensity that makes United States of Love not Wasilewski's best film to date and also a work fully worthy of a Silver Bear in Berlin.
