Actor Martinez

Mike Ott, Nathan Silver
USA 2016 / 75’

Arthur Martinez is a computer technician and an out-of-work actor. While not lacking in enthusiasm or ambition, calls from his agent are few and far between. Instead of becoming discouraged, however, Arthur decides to hire a couple of directors (Ott and Silver) to shoot a film ... about him. It soon becomes clear the protagonist's real life is not nearly as interesting as it might have seemed. And so the the directors make a few dramatic decisions in order to shake things up. As a result of their benevolent intervention, they give Arthur's real-life girlfriend a role in the film. And thanks to a series of probing questions, they come to learn a lot of intimate details about him. When it seems like everything is going according to plan, however, the line between fiction and reality starts to blur, and Arthur, wracked with doubt, desperately tries to make his escape. A review in "The New Yorker" says Ott and Silver display as much craft and cleverness, narrative coordination and a cultivated nose for imminent drama, as they do a daring flair for technique. Regulars at the American Film Festival in Wrocław, Ott and Silver submitted an earlier version of the film for the US in Progress event at the festival in 2015. The final product made its world premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and its U.S. premiere at the Tribeca Festival.
