Misunderstood
In scenes nostalgically reminiscent of the beginning of the 1990s lives 9-year-old Aria, a little girl desperate for her parents’ love. They are in fact getting a divorce amid a bellicose atmosphere of scandal and blame. They both – her promiscuous, decadent mother, a pianist, and her self-infatuated movie star of a father – pay more attention to themselves and to their daughters from their previous relationships, shirking their duty to care for Aria. The little girl bounces around between her parents’ apartments, unable to find understanding, warmth, or stability anywhere, which only increases her feeling of alienation and loneliness. Misunderstood shows the sad fate of a neglected, unloved child and the cruel egoism of her thoughtless parents. But this is also a film that is permeated with the sort of absurd, sharp wit and kitsch that might appeal to fans of Wes Anderson or Todd Solondz. Director Asia Argento has ensured us that, despite many similarities, Misunderstood is not autobiographical.

Asia Argento was born in 1975 in Rome. She is from a very cinematic family – her father is the famous director Dario Argento, and her mother is actress Daria Nicolodi. She began her own adventure with film when she was 9 years old. Today, she has more than 40 film and television credits, has won numerous awards, and has directed three feature films. She also writes novels and short stories.
