Our loyal Festival audience may be familiar with the work of director John Smith as in 2008 we screened his Dirty Pictures. Here, Smith again offers an austere and minimalistic animated film where the visual layer presents select elements of a story underpinned by anxiety. In Dad’s Stick, admiration, adoration and, as may be expected, a son’s love for his father mix with unpleasant parental memories denied by the narrator.
