A Border Musical

Olga Egorova
Pogranichnyy Myuzikl
Russia 2013 / 48’

The reality created in Olga Egorova’s film would appear to be the script for an ostentatious emphasis of our own artificiality. The problems here are, sadly, all too real. Tanya counts on running away from them. She moves to Norway and believes that here she will be singing different songs, leading a happy life at her husband’s side who doesn’t drink alcohol or beat the children. In her brave new world, the voices on the radio sing songs about freedom and happy families. Only a sad choir, a symbol of Tanya’s past, dogging her every footstep, dares to say that it will be otherwise. Swaying together in a gloomy dance, the chorus convinces the woman that Russia is not a place that can be easily left behind. That is her destiny, which has been fated to her, and which will accompany her until the end of her days.
