Morning Patrol

Nikos Nikolaidis
Proini peripolos
Greece 1987 / 108’

This is how the world ends: no thunder, no moaning, but a deafening roar of silence in which an injured woman with bouts of amnesia traipses through an empty landscape to find a ghost town. Though the town’s neons penetrate the darkness and the TV still shows cinema classics, it is nearly depopulated, only outsiders similar to the heroine remain, along with… Morning Patrol. Nikos Nikolaidis’s film is inspired by the prose of Philip K. Dick and Raymond Chandler, but may be compared to another literary classic, as the minimalist work brings to mind Cormac McCarthy’s The Road. In both cases, the post-apocalyptic science fiction genre offers a backdrop to an existential fable, a story of a desperate wait for Godot and a Sisyphean struggle.
