Interview with the Assassin

Neil Burger
USA 2002 / 88’

Diagnosed with terminal cancer, retired marine Walter Ohlinger asks his neighbor, unemployed cameraman Ron Kobeleski, to document his confession – that he, rather than Lee Harvey Oswald, fired the shot that killed John F. Kennedy in Dallas in 1963. The disbelieving but nonetheless intrigued Kobeleski prods Ohlinger to provide ever more convincing evidence for his claims. Director Neil Burger’s film is more than an easy laugh at conspiracy theories. As the story develops, the director ably builds a tension worthy of the best suspense classics, pulling us into Ohlinger’s paranoid universe. Shot mainly from Kobelesky’s perspective and building up to an explosive climax, Interview with the Assassin is an enthralling exercise in genre crossover.
