Some Like It Hot

Billy Wilder
USA 1959 / 120’

Like in many other Wilder films, the thematic and comic motif is trading places. Here, two men are forced to play charming women in a female orchestra. Joe’s/Josephine’s (Tony Curtis) and Jerry’s/Daphne’s (Jack Lemmon) foibles are set against a backdrop of the prohibition, mafia wars, and the charming and seductive Marylin Monroe as Sugar Kane Kowalczyk.

Though the idea seems banal, Wilder manages to leverage to the hilt leads that differ diametrically in appearance and personality (akin to Laurel and Hardy) and, more importantly, make the film much more than a series of gags. Though their personalities change while donning women’s garb, they continue to contrast, assuring a current and topical reflection on gender identity.

Billy Wilder

Billy Wilder, one of the most important directors in the history cinema, noted writer and producer, was born in 1906, in the town of Sucha in the Austro-Hungarian Empire (present-day Sucha Beskidzka in Poland). After studying law, he opted for a career in journalism. Moving to Berlin, he became an assistant screenwriter. Hitler’s rise to power convinced Wilder to emigrate, first to France and then the United States. Moving behind the camera, he went on to work with the brightest actors of Hollywood’s Golden Age, winning six Oscars and top awards at Cannes and Venice. Wilder passed away in 2002.
