With a Warm Heart

Krzysztof Zanussi
Poland 2008 / 96’

Once again, Zanussi turned to the subject 'human beings and death', but this time in a comical way, because this film is an attempted black comedy. Konstanty, an elderly millionaire, whose life is like never-ending bacchanalia, will probably die, if he doesn't undergo a heart transplant soon. And a young man, Stefan who has just lost his job and girlfriend, is determined to put an end to his life, but he fails in multiple suicide attempts. Why then wouldn't the two gentlemen help each other? Especially that from a medical point of view, Stefan is a perfect donor...

The film is quite rough, probably because of the light genre and its conventions. The couple of positive characters are just a pastel-coloured background for Konstanty and his court who are ostentatiously and hellishly depraved. The millionaire's collaborators are on the dark side, infatuated with money: its power and desire for it. But it turns out that anyone can become a better person. The plot is smooth and filled with funny, although predictable twists, and excellent scene with Nina Andrycz. And also a pop singing enticement - Dorota "Doda" Rabczewska, and Wojciech Mann as a businessman.
