Fabricating Tom Zé is a documentary that sketches a consistent portrait of this controversial Brazilian musician, Tom Zé, as we follow him through a myriad of European cities in his 2005 international tour. Tom Zé narrates his early childhood, how we went to São Paulo to participate of the Tropicalia movement, his downfall of the 70's and his consequent rediscovery by David Byrne in the 90's.
Tom Zé testimonies are complemented by interviews with such personalities as David Byrne, Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso. He is presented in peculiar situations such as him working as a gardener. Fabricating Tom Zé, presents a musician that has never compromised his art and, despite his age, he continous to produce highly original music.

Decio Matos Junior graduated with Honors from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. He participated in the 35mm summer workshop at FAMU, the Prague film Academy, in the Czeck Republic. Decio's abilities include directing and producing films in 35mm/16mm as well as digital video. Amongst his works, we may highlight the short film Frames and Bossa in Exile a documentary about a different experiences of Brazilian musicians in New York City. Besides the documentary Fabricating Tom Zé where he also worked as a producer, Decio directed a musical documentary entitles Raices about a Brazilian singer that returns to Cuba to record her first album and seek her roots. He is presently researching of his new documentary on the topic of Brazilian deforestation.
