Vincent Ward
New Zeland 1984 / 90’

Justin and Elizabeth Peers live on a distant farm with their daughter Lisa, known as Toss, and their grandpa, Birdie. They keep sheep and in his free time Justin hunts deer with hawks. During one of his trips, he tries to rescue a lost sheep and he has a fatal accident. The despairing Toss tells her mother and grandfather about the tragedy and Justin's body is brought home by Ethan, a hunter who tracked the same deer. After the funeral Elizabeth hires Ethan to work at the farm. The presence of the new and mysterious man makes Toss feel subconsciously threatened. (…) The only place where the girl feels safe is a car wreck, abandoned in the high grass. This is where Toss attempts to understand the events of the surrounding world.

I'm more interested in outsiders, people from the peripheries rather than those from the centre. I search for characters with their own vision, their own opinion about the world, which is not necessarily an objective one. This is what Vigil is about. It's a story of a lonely girl who observes, fantasises and dreams. She tries to put the elements of the reality she sees together as a whole, one which reflects her own logic. In a film you have to destroy the beautiful surface - break the glass-bell and take out the people who hide in it.

Vincent Ward

Vincent Ward was born in 1956 in Greytown. His mother was a Hamburg-born Jew who fled Nazi Germany to Palestine, his father was from New Zealand. He started in theatre and then move into fine arts, film drama, and then documentaries. He attended the Ilam School of Art in Christchurch, then went to Fine Arts School in Cantenbury, where in early 1978 he was given leave. He left for Te Urewera where he want to realize In Spring One Plants Alone, which was finished in 1980. In 1978 he made A State of Siege based on Janet Frame's novel and six years later he directed Vigil, which was the first film form New Zealand screened at Cannes festival. 1988 saw him directing The Navigator: A Medieval Oddysey, also shown in Cannes. In 1992 he directed Map of the Human Heart which had a $34 million budget compared with $2 million for The Navigator. He worked on the script for Alien 3, at the time of writing he was filming What Dreams May Come. In 2003 Ward produced The Last Samurai by Edward Zwick. Two years later he directed River Queen and this year - documentary Rain of the Children.
