The Art of Disappearing

Bartek Konopka, Piotr Rosołowski
Sztuka znikania
Poland 2013 / 52’

Another fascinating history lesson from Bartek Konopka and Piotr Rosołowski, the makers of Rabbit à la Berlin and Goat Walker, who take us on a journey to Poland at the end of socialism, seen through the eyes of an exotic stranger. Haitian voodoo priest Amon Frémon came to Poland in April 1980 and found work as a teacher at Jerzy Grotowski’s Theatre of Sources. It is unclear how much time he spent in Poland but the People’s Republic of Poland absolutely made an enormous impression on him. He experienced culture shock with respect to Polish morality, the lines of despondent people in front of store, concrete temples and the ‘evil, white rain’ (a.k.a. snow) that fell during the winter. This documentary is more than a journey back in time, it also attempts to find how much of that world still remains.
