The Apartment

Billy Wilder
USA 1960 / 125’

The Apartment is a plot masterpiece with its crisp script, outstanding acting, situational and verbal comedy in a painful reflection on America. The whirlwind tempo keeps audiences rapt at the edge of their seats in this big city symphony about opportunism, exploitation and the moral costs of thoughtlessly living the American way.

A rather old-fashioned and cowed pencil-pusher dreams of a promotion, and is willing to sacrifice anything to make it happen. He is convinced that letting his bosses use his apartment as a love nest is the only surefire way to success. However, his debasing actions make him, while not a pimp, at least an accessory to prostitution. All that changes when he, objectified as a mere facilitator throughout the film, encounters a charming elevator woman who lifts him out of the lethargy of moral indifference.

Billy Wilder

Billy Wilder, one of the most important directors in the history cinema, noted writer and producer, was born in 1906, in the town of Sucha in the Austro-Hungarian Empire (present-day Sucha Beskidzka in Poland). After studying law, he opted for a career in journalism. Moving to Berlin, he became an assistant screenwriter. Hitler’s rise to power convinced Wilder to emigrate, first to France and then the United States. Moving behind the camera, he went on to work with the brightest actors of Hollywood’s Golden Age, winning six Oscars and top awards at Cannes and Venice. Wilder passed away in 2002.
