Sunset Boulevard

Billy Wilder
USA 1950 / 110’

One of Wilder’s darkest films takes a look at a jaundiced relationship between an unfulfilled young screenwriter and a faded Hollywood star riven by time and insanity. Fate throws the pair of applause-seeking has-beens together to mock their desires; the sunset is nigh on the boulevard of Norma Desmond’s and Joe Gillis’s broken dreams.

This timeless noir masterpiece is a simple story of human vanity. It is however, a film that is deeply innovative in its narration, one that is iconoclastic in a Hollywood-on-Hollywood reflection with a grain of salt and a pinch of dark humor. Wilder takes his audience behind the silver screen to demythologize the Dream Factory.

Billy Wilder

Billy Wilder, one of the most important directors in the history cinema, noted writer and producer, was born in 1906, in the town of Sucha in the Austro-Hungarian Empire (present-day Sucha Beskidzka in Poland). After studying law, he opted for a career in journalism. Moving to Berlin, he became an assistant screenwriter. Hitler’s rise to power convinced Wilder to emigrate, first to France and then the United States. Moving behind the camera, he went on to work with the brightest actors of Hollywood’s Golden Age, winning six Oscars and top awards at Cannes and Venice. Wilder passed away in 2002.
