Lost and Beautiful Sfumato

Books, cigarettes and sleep, in other words the Mexican new wave's take on Alain Resnais' Last Year in Marienbad. A young woman and two men live under one roof in Mexico City. They share a bed and books, but their relations are far from warm. In fact, they go about their business with indifference, hardly ever speak, and on those rare occasions when they do try to communicate, they use literature, fragments of novels that they've read. A dealer who occasionally brings them pot and a maid who waters flowers offer those rare moments when external reality slips into their lazy everyday life. What connects them? Why are they always so sleepy? And why is the girl losing control of her legs? Nicolás Pereda, who is no stranger to NH festival audiences (Summer of Goliath, competition entry during the 10th New Horizons; The Absent, first edition of Lost Lost Lost at the 17th Hew Horizons), is in amazing form once again. The relatively short Minotaur, which is open to numerous interpretations, is more than simple praise for the escapism of literature. With its slightly surreal atmosphere, the film evokes the works of Tsai Ming-liang, and in analyzing class relations, thedirector even pokes fun at himself for a moment, showing those who work so that the privileged can sleep, be bored and read books.
