Ana, mon amour Apocalypse Child

Greg Zglinski pulls a fast one on his fans. After making the acclaimed moral dramas One Long Winter Without Fire and Courage, he completely changes directions, and unveils a new thriller instead. Animals is an intense, ferocious film in which horror and humor go hand in hand, and pastiche betrays fidelity to the rules of the genre. The enthusiasm with which the director plays with the audience's expectations is reminiscent of Lars von Trier's Antichrist. Both films have a similar point of departure: the story of a couple in crisis who travel to the countryside to rebuild their damaged relationship. Zglinski adds a self-referential thread to this plot line, however, involving the dilemmas facing the main character, a writer working on her latest novel. Are these disturbing events really happening? Or are they just a projection of Anna's vivid imagination? The need to solve this puzzle is just one of the many tasks facing audiences in Animals.
